About the Journal
Synthetica, published by Tomorrow's Research Publications (TRP), is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal covering synthetic systems — where something that doesn't occur naturally is deliberately engineered to behave like it does, or better. That spans synthetic biology (engineered organisms, genetic circuits, biofabrication) and synthetic/generative AI (models that create text, images, media, and decisions rather than simply classifying or predicting).
We're aware those two fields don't usually share a journal, and that's deliberate. Both are, at their core, about building rather than just observing — designing systems from first principles instead of studying ones that already exist. Researchers in synthetic biology and generative AI are increasingly borrowing each other's design language (circuits, architectures, generative models, emergent behavior), and we think a shared venue helps that cross-pollination happen faster instead of staying trapped in separate conference tracks.
Scope. We welcome submissions on (but not limited to):
- Synthetic biology: engineered genetic circuits, biofabrication, cell-free systems
- Metabolic engineering and biosynthetic pathway design
- Generative AI: image, text, audio, and video generation models
- Synthetic media, deepfakes, and digital content authenticity/provenance
- Design principles shared across biological and computational synthetic systems
- Safety, biosecurity, and dual-use considerations in synthetic biology
- AI safety, alignment, and governance for generative systems
- Ethical and societal implications of synthetic technologies
Peer review. Every submission goes through double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers with relevant subject expertise, coordinated by our editorial board. We target a first decision within of submission. Reviewers with a personal, financial, or institutional connection to a submitted manuscript are recused from the process.
Open access. All articles in Synthetica are published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license, with no subscription or paywall for readers.
Publication ethics. Synthetica follows Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines on authorship, data integrity, plagiarism, and conflicts of interest. Submissions are screened for originality before entering peer review, and we maintain a clear process for handling misconduct allegations, including correction and retraction where warranted. Given the dual-use potential of synthetic biology research in particular, authors working in this area are expected to address biosafety and biosecurity considerations directly in their manuscript.
Who we are. Synthetica is edited by a board of active researchers working across synthetic biology, machine learning, and computational design . The journal is published by Tomorrow's Research Publications (TRP), an independent open-access publisher building rigorously reviewed journals in emerging and underserved research areas.
